Frequently Asked Questions
When does a new puzzle arrive?
At midnight in your own timezone. Everyone in the world plays the same category on the same calendar day, so a friend on the other side of the planet may be a few hours ahead of you, but never on a different puzzle.
Is Lettra free?
Yes. The daily puzzle is free on the web, with no account and nothing to install. On desktop, ads may appear in the margins beside the game, never on the timed screen. The iOS app also has an optional subscription, Lettra Unlimited, that unlocks replaying past puzzles.
Do I need an account?
No. Your streak, your stats and your past results live in your browser’s local storage. That also means they do not follow you between devices, and clearing your browser data clears them.
Why was my word rejected?
A word is accepted when its first letter is still open on the board and it fits the category. If it is not on the day’s list, it is checked against the category before a decision, so you may see “Checking…” for a moment. The usual reasons for a rejection are a typo, a word that belongs to a neighbouring category, or a letter that is already locked or struck through. Numbers need spelling out. The rules page goes into detail, and a word you are sure about can be sent to support@lettra.app with the date.
How does the clock work?
It is elastic rather than fixed. You start with 60 seconds on Relaxed, 45 on Standard or 35 on Hard, and every accepted word adds 3 seconds. The round ends when the clock runs dry or when you press Finish, so it lasts exactly as long as you keep finding words.
How is the score worked out?
100 points for every letter you lock, 25 more for each of the 3 rare letters marked on the board, and 12 points per second left on the clock when you finish. A perfect round locks all 26 letters, minus any that are struck through because no answer exists for them in that category.
What is a streak?
The number of consecutive days you have played the daily puzzle. Only your first attempt each day counts towards it; replays are kept as your best score and never hurt your stats.
Can I see the answers to a past puzzle?
Yes. Every finished puzzle is in the puzzle archive with its category, the rare and dead letters, and one sample answer for every letter. Today’s puzzle appears there only once the day has ended everywhere, so nothing is spoiled.
Where do the categories come from?
Each category has a long answer list that is built and reviewed before the puzzle is published, ranked so the answers most people reach for lock in instantly. Words that are turned down are reviewed afterwards and good ones are added, so the lists keep growing. Suggestions are welcome at feedback@lettra.app.
What happens to my data?
Nothing leaves your browser except the words you type when they need checking against the category, and anonymous, cookieless page-view counts. There is no tracking of how you play. The privacy policy has the full detail.
Is there an app?
An iOS app is in development; the web game is the same daily puzzle. Lettra runs in any modern browser and works offline once the day’s puzzle has loaded.
